There are some proposal shoots where both people end up crying. Those are the ones I find myself thinking about long after the day is over — and this one is right at the top of that list.
We met at the Japanese garden inside Osaka Castle Park on a quiet morning. There were already a few visitors walking around, but nothing close to the usual crowds, and the late-blooming cherry blossoms still hanging on gave the whole place a soft, gentle feeling. It really was the perfect setting for what was about to happen.
He and I had worked out a simple plan together beforehand. The idea was for me to walk up as a tourist and ask them to take a photo of me, and then offer to return the favour and take one of the two of them. From the moment I introduced myself, they were so warm and easy to talk to that the whole conversation flowed naturally — which made the “shall I take a photo of you both?” question feel like the most normal thing in the world to ask. She did not suspect a thing.
When my signal came, he turned to her and asked. The moment that followed is one I will hold onto for a long time. She was completely overwhelmed — tears in her eyes, hands lifting to her face, the kind of pure reaction you can never fake. And then, as I was photographing her, I noticed something I had not expected: he was crying too. Watching the two of them stand there, both in tears, holding onto each other — it is honestly one of the most beautiful things I have been able to photograph this year. I felt the weight of it standing behind the camera, and I was so grateful to be the one trusted with it.
After they had a few quiet moments together, we moved over to the part of the garden where the last of the season’s cherry blossoms were still in bloom. We kept shooting there for a while, and every single photo I showed them on the back of the camera, they loved. They are also some of the gentlest, kindest, brightest people I have had the chance to work with — calm in the loveliest way, and so easy to be around.
Thank you both for letting me be part of this beautiful day, and for trusting me with one of the most important moments in your story together. Congratulations — I am so happy for you, and I hope life brings you back to Japan again sometime soon.
