Some proposal moments freeze in your memory forever. This one — the exact second she turned and saw him kneeling with the ring in his hand — is one of those for me.

We had planned this shoot for an early morning slot in August. Osaka summers are usually a real test, but this year was noticeably cooler than most, and starting early made the whole session feel comfortable rather than punishing. When they arrived, the area we had chosen was completely empty. It was just the three of us, the castle grounds, and the soft morning light.

He had come into this shoot really prepared. Everything I had walked him through beforehand, he had absorbed perfectly. When the moment arrived, he moved through it with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from thinking about it enough times to know exactly what he wanted. She was completely surprised — she had no read on what was about to happen at all — and then she turned, saw him, and her whole face changed at once. That’s the moment I keep coming back to when I think about this session.

Because there was nobody else around, the whole thing had this beautifully private feeling. No strangers walking through. No noise. Just the two of them, right there in that moment. It made a real difference to how the photos came out.

After the proposal itself, we spent the rest of the hour walking around and shooting in a bunch of different spots. What made this part so much fun was how collaborative it became — I would suggest a pose or a location, they would try it, then they would come back with their own idea for the next one. We just kept building on each other. Sessions where the couple is that engaged and creative are honestly my favourite kind of shoot to do.

By the time we wrapped up, they had loved every image I had shown them on the back of the camera, and I finished the morning feeling really lucky to have been the one there for it.

Most proposal moments I photograph come with tears. This one had tears too — but honestly, the loudest thing about it was the laughter. Her surprise turned instantly into big, joyful, uncontrollable laughing, and it set the tone for the entire session.

The day was hot. Really hot. We had planned an early meeting to sidestep both the heat and the crowds, and it worked exactly as we had hoped — the grounds around us were beautifully quiet when the two of them arrived, and the temperature was actually manageable at that hour.

I started the sequence the way we had planned. I walked up as a tourist and asked them if they could take a photo of me. She had zero suspicion — she was so kind about it, took the photo with a smile, and there was not a flicker of doubt on her face. When I turned the moment around and offered to take one of the two of them, still nothing. The plan was working perfectly.

Then he asked, and everything changed. She realized in an instant what was happening, and her reaction just burst out — surprise, delight, a bit of a tear or two, and this huge, uncontrollable laugh that carried through the whole moment. I was shooting the entire time, and I could feel that joy on my side of the camera too. It’s honestly one of the best feelings in this work.

After that, the rest of the session felt more like a hang-out with friends than a photoshoot. We kept talking the whole way, and every idea I threw out, they went for. I tried a bunch of different setups, poses, and small little ideas — and every time I showed them what I had captured on the back of the camera, they lit up again.

There are certain sessions that quietly remind you why you love this job. This one did that for me. The energy of this couple, the joy of that moment, and the trust they gave me the whole way through — it added up to one of those mornings I finished feeling really grateful.

How do you photograph a surprise proposal in Osaka in early July? The short answer is careful planning, plenty of shade breaks, and a couple who don’t complain even once. This shoot had all three.

Early July in Osaka is hot. Not just warm — hot in that thick, humid way that summer here does so well. So going into this morning, I was honestly a little worried about how they would handle the temperature. He and I had planned the proposal itself down to the small details beforehand, and thankfully the whole moment happened so smoothly that the heat never even came into play for that part.

He arrived at the meeting spot right on time. Because we had our timing dialled in, the proposal happened exactly as we had planned — smooth, private, with nobody else around. She was completely surprised. It was so clear from the look on her face that she had not seen it coming at all. Then she hugged him with pure joy, and I was able to catch that whole exchange in a lot of frames I am really happy with.

After the proposal, we kept shooting — and this is where the couple really impressed me. Instead of getting worn down by the heat, they stayed upbeat, made jokes about it, and just kept enjoying the session. My rhythm for the rest of the hour became: take some photos, walk into the shade, take a breather, then head back out for the next set. Rinse and repeat.

Somehow, that pace worked beautifully. We still ended up with a lot of the kind of photos I love — natural, warm, full of the joy they had brought with them from the start. Honestly, watching couples who can handle a hot Osaka morning without losing their spark is one of my favourite things to see.

They loved every photo I showed them on the back of the camera, and by the end of the session, I was so happy the shoot had come together the way it did.

The idea was for me to walk up as a tourist and ask them to take a photo of me, and then offer to return the favour and take one of the two of them. From the moment I introduced myself, they were so warm and easy to talk to that the whole conversation flowed naturally — which made the “shall I take a photo of you both?” question feel like the most normal thing in the world to ask. She did not suspect a thing.

When my signal came, he turned to her and asked. The moment that followed is one I will hold onto for a long time. She was completely overwhelmed — tears in her eyes, hands lifting to her face, the kind of pure reaction you can never fake. And then, as I was photographing her, I noticed something I had not expected: he was crying too. Watching the two of them stand there, both in tears, holding onto each other — it is honestly one of the most beautiful things I have been able to photograph this year. Namba Osaka at night is always a tempting place to photograph — bright neon, glowing paper lanterns, the kind of energy you cannot manufacture anywhere else in Japan. But the part I love most about shooting here is the opposite of all that: finding the small, quiet pockets tucked just out of sight between the busy streets. With this couple, we got to do plenty of both.

They were one of those couples I knew I was going to enjoy the moment we met. Within minutes of saying hello, the conversation was flowing easily — about Osaka, about their trip, about everything. They had also told me they had looked through many photographers’ work before reaching out, and hearing that meant a lot. Knowing they had chosen me on purpose changed the whole feeling of the session for me.

We started in the bright heart of Dotonbori, surrounded by the big billboards and the paper lanterns that make this part of Osaka so unmistakable. I had spent some time scouting beforehand, so I knew exactly which corners caught the best light and which angles gave the cleanest views. When I showed them the first photos on the back of the camera, they really loved how the colours of the signs and lanterns wrapped around them. That is always such a nice moment — when you can tell early on that the photos are landing.

From there, I started walking them away from the crowds. Dotonbori can feel almost overwhelming on a busy night, so I took them into some of the smaller side streets and tucked-away spots that most visitors do not stumble across — places where the neon still glows in the background but you can actually hear each other talk. They were genuinely surprised at how quickly the noise faded. At one point they laughed and said, “this is your secret spot, isn’t it?” That made my night.

Honestly, this is the kind of session that reminds me why I love photographing here. A great couple, a city full of character, and the freedom to bring people into the parts of Osaka most tourists never get to see. Even an hour goes by quickly when everything clicks like that.

Then about halfway through, the rain started. Not a heavy storm, but enough that most couples might have wanted to call it. These two just laughed and kept going. We took some of my favorite photos of the day in that gentle rain — them hugging close, laughing under one shared umbrella, the castle softening in the background. It was the kind of moment you cannot stage. The rain became part of the story, and somehow it made everything feel even more theirs.

I think about this session a lot. Their warmth, their ease, the way they made even an unexpected change in weather feel like part of the plan — it’s the kind of energy I am so grateful to be able to photograph.

A Wonderful Reunion: Photographing a Returning Couple at Osaka Castle

I had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful couple at Osaka Castle recently — and this time it was especially meaningful for me, because I had photographed the two of them once before, for their surprise proposal a few years ago. They came back to Osaka on their trip to Japan and reached out to book me again, and I cannot even tell you how happy I was to hear from them.

This time it was not a surprise proposal but a relaxed couple session, which actually made the planning so smooth. She had thought about it in advance and let me know exactly which spots she wanted to shoot at, so we were able to plan the whole morning around what they really wanted. I love when clients come with their own ideas like that — it makes the session feel so personal.

We met very early in the morning at a beautiful big bridge with a stunning view of Osaka Castle. Because it was so early, the area was almost completely empty, with hardly anyone around at all. The light was beautiful, the castle was right there behind us, and we were able to take so many lovely photos without having to wait or work around other people in the background. It had been raining that day, and I was honestly a little worried that we might have to postpone or even cancel the shoot. I kept checking the weather forecast carefully throughout the morning, and right when the rain stopped, we got our window — and we made the most of it.

While I was waiting for them to arrive, I pretended to be just another tourist looking at the flowers, so as not to give anything away. The area was so peaceful, with only a few local people quietly walking by — there was almost no one else around at all, which made it the most beautiful and private location for a proposal.

They were such a fun couple to work with — they enjoyed every single idea I suggested and posed so naturally for everything. It really made the rest of the session so much fun for me too.

I had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful family at Osaka Castle Park — a bright, cheerful father and mother together with their incredibly cute daughter. From start to finish, this was one of those sessions where everyone, including me, had so much fun.
At the very beginning, their daughter was a little shy in front of the camera, which is so understandable for a small child meeting a photographer for the first time. But it did not take long at all before she started showing such natural, happy expressions. That was thanks to her parents — they were so amazing at creating a fun atmosphere for her, singing songs and dancing together with her to help her relax. Watching them turn the whole shoot into a kind of game for their daughter really made my day.

Her mother is also a photographer who takes truly beautiful photos, and their daughter had brought along her own little camera as well. She started taking photos of her father and even of me as I was working, and seeing her so focused and excited behind her own camera was honestly one of the cutest things. I’m so happy I got to be part of that moment.

The park was almost empty that day, which gave us so much freedom to try different ideas together. We ran around, sat on the ground, tried all kinds of poses and moods — it really felt less like a photoshoot and more like spending a morning with friends. The one-hour session went by so quickly.
