The moment he got down on one knee, she actually took a small step back. Not from anything but pure, real surprise — the kind you can only see when someone truly had no idea it was coming. And then, in the very next breath, she was in his arms.
We had planned this for very early in the morning, on purpose. The spot we had chosen at Osaka Castle Park is one of those places where, if you get there before the crowds, you can have the whole space almost entirely to yourself. On this morning, that is exactly what happened. When she arrived, there was not a single other person around. It felt truly private — quiet enough to hear him ask, quiet enough for her real reaction to unfold without a single distraction.
His proposal itself was so beautiful — thoughtful, calm, so full of love. And her reaction was one of those moments I am so glad I had my camera up for. That tiny step back she took, before her mind caught up with what was happening, is honestly one of the most honest reactions I have ever captured. Half a second later, she had thrown her arms around him, laughing and holding on tight all at once.
Being able to photograph that entire arc — the ask, the surprise, the joy, the hug — is something I do not take for granted. Standing behind the camera, I felt so happy for them, and honestly a little emotional too.
After the proposal, we kept walking around the park, and the two of them turned out to be some of the brightest, funniest people I have photographed in a while. The rest of the hour flew by, filled with easy conversation and easy smiles. I finished the session feeling like I had spent time with people I hoped to see again someday.
Thank you both for choosing me to be there for such an important morning, and for trusting me with something so real. Congratulations — I am so happy for you, and I really hope you come back to Japan sometime.
