Almost every proposal I photograph happens early in the morning, before the crowds arrive. This one didn’t — and honestly, I’m glad it turned out that way.
We met a little later than usual, and Osaka Castle Park was already busy. There were people everywhere, taking photos and enjoying the morning. Normally that would make me a little nervous. Instead, it made my job easier. With so many tourists around, blending in as one of them was effortless. I simply walked up to the couple and asked if they would mind taking my photo, and our plan was underway.
When he proposed, she was overwhelmed — tears, a huge smile, and the kind of happiness that is impossible to hide. And then something lovely happened: the people around us noticed. Strangers turned, smiled, and started clapping. For a moment, the whole space felt like it was celebrating with them.
A little later, a woman who had been nearby came over to the couple. “I saw the whole thing,” she said. “It was beautiful. Can I see the ring?” She congratulated them warmly, and the two of them were beaming. It was such a small, simple exchange, but it is one of my favourite memories from this shoot.
I have always loved photographing proposals in quiet, empty places. There is something special about a moment that belongs only to two people. But this morning reminded me that the opposite can be beautiful too. When the people around you share in your happiness — even people you have never met — the moment grows a little bigger.
After the proposal, we kept shooting around the park. The two of them were calm, gentle, and so easy to work with, and they welcomed every pose idea I suggested. We came away with a wide range of photos, and their reaction when they saw them made my day.
Thank you both for choosing me to be part of this. Congratulations — I hope life brings you back to Japan again soon.
If you can’t make an early morning start, don’t worry — a busier time can work beautifully too. You can find out more about my Osaka packages here.
