Every year, from late November through mid December, Japan turns into one of the most photogenic places on earth. The autumn foliage — 紅葉, or momiji in Japanese — draws visitors from around the world, and for good reason. As a photographer based in Osaka and shooting regularly through Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, autumn is honestly one of my favourite seasons to be behind the camera.
Here’s a look at some of the most beautiful areas to consider for your autumn photoshoot in Kansai, along with a few things I’ve learned about making the most of them.
When Is Peak Autumn in Kansai?
In Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, the peak of autumn colours generally falls between late November and mid December. This can shift by a week or two depending on the year’s weather, but if you’re planning a trip, targeting the last week of November through the first two weeks of December gives you the best chance of catching the colours at their fullest.
Colour progression usually starts in higher mountain areas first (early to mid November) and reaches the city temples and parks a couple of weeks later.

Kyoto’s Autumn Spots
Kyoto is arguably Japan’s autumn capital.
Arashiyama — the classic western Kyoto district turns brilliant in autumn. The mountains behind the Togetsukyo Bridge glow orange and red, and walking through the area during peak season is genuinely one of the more magical experiences you can have in Japan. This is one of my personal favourite areas to shoot in the fall — the combination of the river, the mountains, and the traditional buildings all lit up in autumn colours is hard to beat.
Kyoto Imperial Palace Gardens (Kyoto Gyoen) — a much quieter option than the famous tourist temples. Wide open spaces, plenty of maple trees, and far fewer crowds. If you want autumn foliage without the tourist stampede, this is an underrated choice.
The Gion / Higashiyama area — walking through the older streets in autumn with the occasional maple tree glowing against traditional wooden architecture is beautiful in its own way. Less about the sea of colour, more about the quiet moments.

Osaka in Autumn
Osaka doesn’t get quite the same autumn attention as Kyoto, but it’s still beautiful.
Osaka Castle Park — the combination of the castle, the pond, and the surrounding trees creates some striking autumn photos. Early morning is best here — before the crowds and with softer light.

Nara Park and the Deer in Autumn
Autumn in Nara Park is a special kind of scene — fall colours against traditional temples, and the famous deer roaming through it all. Very few places in the world offer that particular combination.

A Few Timing Tips
- Start early. Autumn is peak tourist season, and popular spots get crowded quickly. Meeting at 8 AM makes a real difference.
- Weekdays are quieter. If your travel dates allow, aim for Tuesday through Thursday.
- Don’t cancel for cloudy weather. Overcast days actually give beautiful, even light for autumn photos.

Why Working with a Local Photographer Matters
Every autumn, I get asked the same question: “Where should we go?” And honestly, the answer depends on so many things — the exact week you’re visiting, what kind of atmosphere you want, whether you prefer temples or nature or streets. Working with someone who’s been shooting through Kansai for years means you don’t have to guess.
