In the early morning of mid December 2025, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful surprise proposal in Arashiyama, Kyoto.

As a Kyoto proposal photographer, I often wake up very early for these special moments, and this morning was no exception. It was a very cold winter morning, but the weather was perfectly clear and sunny. Winter in Kyoto offers very soft and beautiful light, which makes it a wonderful season for a romantic proposal photoshoot.

We met near the peaceful Katsura River in Arashiyama. Because I am a local photographer familiar with the area, I suggested a quiet spot away from the crowds. Arashiyama can become very busy during the day, so choosing the right location and timing is very important for a surprise proposal.

Everything went exactly according to the plan we had discussed in advance.

The proposal was a complete success.

She clearly did not expect it at all and was incredibly surprised and happy. Capturing genuine emotional moments like this is always very special for me. As a Kyoto photographer with more than 10 years of experience, these are the moments that make this work so meaningful.

After the proposal, we continued the photoshoot around the famous Arashiyama bamboo forest and the Katsura River area. She kept smiling the entire time while admiring her beautiful new ring. Both of them were incredibly kind and cheerful, and it was truly an honor to be part of such an important moment during their trip to Japan.
